Future-Proofing Love: The Single’s Way to Stability in a Chaotic Dating World

It’s finally happened - the dating pendulum’s swinging back!

Millennials and Gen-Z are growing tired of the chaos that is modern “dating”— constant swiping, situationships, unclear intentions and the inevitable ghosting. Enter ‘future-proofing’ - one of the latest trends to emerge in 2025, calculated to reinvent the dating landscape!

What even is future-proofing? A concept (apparently first coined by Bumble) that entails choosing a partner based not on fleeting temporary qualities/possessions, but on core beliefs, values, goals!

What a brave, new world we live in! 😂

But in all honesty, it’s great that more people are craving something real and lasting, founded  on a stronger foundation than just physical attraction, common hobbies or money/social status.

God is waking people up to the value of His good, tried-and-true principles - principles that are right there in the Bible!

I’m not kidding - here are five key areas where future-proofing love is shown to be derived straight from Scripture:

1. Making sure you’re both aligned in values (2 Cor 6:14)

“Do not be yoked together with unbelievers.”

All the best Christian relationship advice out there will insist on this - yet it is so easy to ignore when you’re carried along the waves of emotion.

But once the emotion quiets down, you’re going to see major shakiness in the foundation - shakiness that has wiped out countless marriages before. So the most essential element of future-proofing? To seek a partner who actually believes in the God you believe.

2. Making sure you’re pursuing the same goals (Eccl 4:9-10)

“Can two walk together unless they are agreed?”

No solid relationship can begin to form if there is no agreement on their mutual goals. This is honestly why you’d be seeking a lifetime partner in the first place - to have a fellow helper, a teammate for God’s mission for your life. Future-proofing love involves finding someone whose calling aligns with yours, whether it’s ministry, family, or serving others.

3. Going with character instead of just chemistry (Prov 4:23)

“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

What this Biblical proverb says is RADICAL (for a world that over-emphasizes the visual) - that it is only the one who deeply acknowledges the Father who’d end up being a praiseworthy partner for your life.

Singles who want to ‘future-proof’ should look beyond butterflies to verified traits like honesty, kindness, and dependence on God, for a love that will never stop blessing them.

4. Having a covenant mindset (Matt 19:6)

“What God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Our Lord’s affirmation of the marriage vow is WEIGHTY. This has never been the casual, meaningless arrangement that many tend to view it as nowadays.

Future-proofing means both parties don’t plan on having loopholes - they’re saying a firm “yes” to a life-long covenant.

5. Ensuring clarity on timing (Eccl 3:1)

“There is a time for everything…”
“If someone thinks he is acting inappropriately toward his betrothed, and if she is beyond her youth and they ought to marry, let him do as he wishes; he is not sinning; they should get married.”

“Love-bombing” and stalling, rushing and delaying - both are indicators that you likely don’t have the right priorities in mind in your relationship, and both can be disrespectful to your chosen partner.

Future-proofing involves not just the patience & commitment to build a strong, healthy relationship - but also respect for the other’s time— prayerfully and openly walking towards the goal God has for you.

So once again, the Bible is shown to be amazingly relevant, even in this modern age. Take a page (or hundred) from it for the best ‘future-proofing’ your love story - and the entire rest of your life - could ever have!
